Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the Malawi International Arbitration Centre (MIAC)
Charles Martin Mhone is a distinguished legal practitioner and arbitration specialist with extensive expertise in international commercial and corporate law. He serves as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the Malawi International Arbitration Centre (MIAC), where he is pioneering the operationalisation of Malawi’s first institution dedicated to both domestic and international arbitration. He is also a Partner at Maxson Arnold & Associates, where he specialises in corporate and commercial law.
Charles holds an LL.M. in International Corporate and Commercial Law from King’s College London and a Diploma in International Arbitration from the Africa Arbitration Academy. He has further obtained multiple certifications from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in the practice of international arbitration, attaining MCIArb membership. He serves as the CIArb Young Members Group (YMG) Ambassador for Malawi, and as Co-Chairperson for the Southern Africa Region of the Young African Arbitration Association (Young AfAA). He is also a member of the LCIA African Users’ Council.
With extensive experience in both domestic and international arbitration, Mr Mhone has served as an arbitrator, mediator, and consultant in high-value commercial disputes conducted under leading international frameworks such as UNCITRAL and the ICC. He also contributed to the establishment of the Malawi International Commercial Arbitration Centre, playing a pivotal role in strengthening Malawi’s arbitration landscape.
In addition to his work in arbitration, Mr Mhone has held key leadership roles in national institutions. He served as Vice Chairperson of the Board of the National Food Reserve Agency, and as Chairperson of both the Establishments and Operations Committee and the Projects and Finance Committee of the Southern Region Water Board, one of Malawi’s largest state-owned water utility enterprises.
